Mysterious pieces of alluvial silex (or chert, a very hard form of microcrystalline silica) found only in certain vineyards of Gevrey Chambertin and thought to be derived from the large Combe de Lavaut. We suspect the presence of this silex indicates a strong alluvial component in the soil.
