• Gérard Mugneret
  • Bourgogne Les Rouges Champs

    At a Glance

    • Etymology: Les Rouges Champs means "the Red Fields." Oddly though, the soils in Rouges Champs are not red (iron-rich) so the name must refer to something else than its geology.
    • Size: 0.23 ha (0.57 ac)
    • Variety: Pinot Noir
    • Vine Age: Planted in 1970
    • Terroir: Located just the other side of the D974 road at the southwestern corner of Clos Vougeot. Downslope from the Combe d’Orveau, on its alluvial fan, with light-colored soils and plenty of gravel.
    • Viticulture: Uncertified biodynamic
    • Vinification: 70% whole cluster, ambient yeast ferment, aged in oak barrels (25% new) for for 12 to 18 months. Since 2016, very moderate sulfur additions: none during vinification, a little during élevage and before bottling, for a total of 15 to 20 ppm.

    Additional Info

Les Rouges Champs has a much more focused core than the regular Bourgogne. The clays are white (contrarily to the vineyard’s name) and that’s where the lift and extra linearity come from. There is also finesse. It is a brilliant Bourgogne that bats way above its hierarchy.
